Illinois State Police Moving Into the Digital Age

shutterstock_258405011.jpgStarting in 2022, the Illinois State Police (ISP) Firearms Services Bureau (FSB) has debuted a new way of getting information relating to a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) or Conceal Carry Permit (CCL) applications. Changes to the ISP FSB Portal include new notification options, as well as self-serve Kiosks at three locations.

“The Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau is working diligently to ensure the statutory changes to the FOID Act will benefit the people of Illinois,” stated ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly. “This opt out option will make it easier and quicker for the public to receive notifications regarding their FOID card and/or CCL,” concluded Kelly.

The notification options include receiving emails or text messages instead of the traditional letter through the United States Postal Service (USPS). Many people who have applied for a FOID or CCL never receive their letters. Others spend months or years waiting on a response. The notification system provides a more reliable way of receiving information on the status of an application.

For those that do not have easy access to a computer or internet access at home, FSB has also established a Kiosk system. The Kiosks provide a number of services including:

  • Submitting name/address changes, renewals and new applications
  • Taking a photo for the application
  • Assistance with correcting rejected applicants
  • Checking the status of an application
  • Log in assistance; password resets

The Kiosks can be found in three locations:

  • Northern IL: Illinois State Police District 5, 16648 Broadway St, Lockport, IL 60441 Regular Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. & 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Central IL: Illinois State Police Central Headquarters, 801 S 7th St, Springfield, IL 62703 Regular Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Southern IL: Illinois State Police District 13, 1391 S Washington St, Du Quoin, IL 62832 Regular Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The ISP Firearms Services Bureau is currently processing FOID renewal applications in 38 calendar days. The statutory mandate requires FOID renewal applications to be processed within 60 business days.

Kiosks are on a first-come, first-served basis. Representatives from the Office of Firearms Safety will NOT be available at the Kiosks to assist customers with their revoked cards or denied applications.

If you’ve received a denial or would like more information on the application process, Williams & Nickl handles more FOID and CCL cases than anyone in Illinois. If you find yourself needing assistance, Williams & Nickl can provide the help you need.
